Latch Tutorial: Model SS30 and SS30OD (verified owner)–
Great quality gate
We have a deck with a long set of descending stairs. We wanted a sturdy gate that secures the opening so no kids go tumbling down the stairs. This gate is sturdy, matches our black deck railings, and installs easily. This gate has an adjustable width as well as a lock to set which way it opens. It has lasted two winters so far and still works great!

works and looks great!
We installed this at the bottom of our pool stairs off of our deck. Very sturdy and well built. Pretty easy install as well!

Just what I needed
Came with all the hardware needed. Easy to assemble. Used this outside on my deck to prevent toddlers from access to the pool.

Keeping our dog from running away.
We just adopted a terrier mix, who is a bit of an escape artist. When opening the front door, she would get between your legs and run off. This gate offers that extra level of protection we needed. It was generally easy to install, and everything looks to be well made. My only issue was the lock. It's not a very intuitive design. Since we didn't need it, I just snapped it off with a screw driver. I really think the manufacturer should consider making it a separate option. Overall very happy with the purchase.

Fantastic, secure gate
This outdoor gate has been awesome. I have a one, two, and five year old and it has held up at the top of the stairs on our deck. My five year old has ADHD/ASD and I’m always concerned about her taking off outside. But she has yet to figure out this gate which has been a relief. It has gotten a little difficult to latch/unlatch as time has gone on, I’m assuming from exposure to the elements. But I’m not really complaining too much because it’s so sturdy. Now to find a fully 5 year old proof gate for indoors!

Solid outdoor gate, great for children
Assuming this product hasn't changed in the last year, I am a big fan. I've had one installed outside in the Pacific Northwest for over a year. It gets rained on often and has only the slightest bit of oxidation on a spot on the underside of the gate where where water tends to sit the most. Otherwise it looks practically new.
The latch mechanism is very simple in design and construction, but very effective. It even confuses my wife sometimes. You have to precisely push both small latches down completely or either one will catch on the gate and prevent it from lifting out. It's not easy to open if you are, say, trying to carry armfuls of stuff. However, a young child is extremely unlikely to figure it out, since you have to precisely unlatch and lift simultaneously before pushing it open.
The fit was perfect for my deck entrance. It feels very solid. It's pretty enough. It's just a nice gate overall. My only complaint is that I wanted a second one recently and the price has gone up significantly from my first purchase. I still feel like the increased price is worth it, though.

Works, but doesn't stay opem
Relatively easy to install, easy to use, and seems sturdy enough. Love that there's no bottom threshold to step over. Biggest (and only) problem is that it doesn't stay open by itself. Luck and gravity may stop it from swinging shut for some lucky people, but there's no mechanism to hold it open or to lock it open. Be prepared to leave it closed all the time, put a cinderblock in front of it, or invent your own way to create a custom catch to keep it open.

Don’t be dumb like me
For what the gate is, it’s great, light weight and a gate. Now, don’t be like me. First of all, I saw all the pictures and thought hey that throughway looks just like mine. Great, it’ll fit. Except my throughway is apparently not a standard size. I ended up needing the extension. Thank goodness they have one. Secondly, don’t separate the two parts of the gate during unboxing. Otherwise you WILL have to research how to put them back together. It’s like one of those brain puzzles where you try everything but the actual solution. Then you go “ohhhhhhh!!” They have easy to find videos on the topic, so score. Thirdly there’s a bracket with all sorts of stickers and instructions in all caps and bold saying “THIS END UP.” I followed the instructions to a T and it didn’t work. That’s because I had the GATE upside down. I don’t think the instructions specify, but a normal person might reference the pictures for that sort of thing.
Here’s where I wish I would have done more research and the point I learned that there are some things about gates that I have taken for granted in my lifetime.
1. I wish there were a spring to guide the gate back to the latch.
2. To open, you have to pinch latch downward and lift gate upward. Not a one handed operation. But will be good for young kids and pets who can’t figure it.
3. Even if it had a spring, it would not go back in the latch automatically as you have to lift the gate for that. I actually like this feature because you won’t mindlessly swing the gate back and assume it latched itself. You have to be deliberate about closing it. It’s less likely for a “gate didn’t catch” incident. But inconvenient for high traffic or single handed maneuvering.
For what it is, it’s good. I will keep it. I should have done a little more research for my personal needs but it does what I need it to do. And I’ll be fine.
