Absolutely LOVE this! Grinds perfectly! Fairly quiet, doesn't scare the dogs when grinding peppercorns. Size is perfect for hands and holds plenty (almost 1/4 cup but I did the peppercorns in 2 batches, just to get everything ground evenly). Excellent price for the quality. A little hard to take apart the first time, because the stopper around the blade base is so firm. Just be patient and wiggle/pull gently. If I ever need one again, I would definitely buy this one!

Efficient and quietGreat gadget. Simple and easy to use. Very quick grinding, most of the time just a few seconds are required. I use it for spices- whole allspice, milk thistle seeds, coriander, etc- and it works beautifully. Put the spices (or whatever) into the cup, press on the top, and in no time at all you have a powder. Very quiet. Very easy to clean. What else could you want? And a very nice price too.

A fine toolThis is a good gadget. I gave only 4 stars because when you grind the spices, there is no cover for the grinder bowl and some powedered spices leak out of there. To stop this, I attach a piece of cling wrap to the top of the grinder bowl with a rubber band. Then I put the cover over and push the cover down to grind. It helps the ground material to stay in the bowl. The design should have contemplated this. The separate cover is too thick to be used during grinding. With the cling wrap in place, this is a fine tool and very easy to use.

Love it! Works as it's supposed to.This is our second one, so we have a little more insight to provide. First one lasted a good 10ish years, so I can't say I minded having to pick up a replacement. New one works just as well as the last one. Only reason the last one pooped out was the black turning mechanism under the cup came loose and was unfixable. New one seems to have a slightly different locking mechanism so time will tell if that gives it more longevity or not. But otherwise it works exactly as described, and pulverizes even the toughest spices like whole cinnamon sticks! Really is best for dry ingredients. Don't recommended for anything wet necessarily, but I'm sure it could do it if you wanted. Hand washing is preferred by me because I'm so worried about rust, but we used to throw the old one in the dishwasher often enough, and it never rusted. So feel free to dishwash if you need to.

Doing the Job So Far (spoke too soon...died in July)I purchased this to grind flax seed and other hard seeds for my horses, and so far, it has worked well. I'd burnt up too many coffee grinders doing this in the past, so spent a bit more on this Cuisinart grinder and it definitely is better built. I've been using it daily for a few weeks and it has performed well so far. It does not grind super fine, so if that is what you need, it won't do that (no way to adjust the grind), but it does seem to be up to the task of grinding really hard seeds, which were too much for my previous coffee grinders. I use fenugreek seed in cookies I make for the horses (yes, they are spoiled!), and those ground up well, which was a good test as they killed the last coffee grinder.
I left one star off only because, as a previous reviewer observed, you have to store it with the lid on, and that is the trigger to turn it on as well, so I've inadvertently switched it on just by bumping it (I leave it plugged in and on a shelf so it is at hand, since I use it daily). I do worry I might drop or knock the lid off, as it does just kind of hover on top.
Only time will tell if this continues to work as well and lasts longer than the past coffee grinders!
JULY EDIT: used the grinder daily for flax seed for my horses, no problem, and today it is dead. No warning, no issue before now, just will not work at all. I'm hoping Cuisinart will replace it so will update if I hear from them, but really bummed as I liked the grinder for what I was doing. I took the rating down to two stars, which is based on liking it for all this time, but 3 months of use seems ridiculously short when this was not cheap.
AUGUST UPDATE: yes, August…took over two weeks to get a final answer from Cuisinart. My 3 month old dead grinder is covered by warranty, but in order to get a new one, I have to pay to ship the defective unit back (by insured track able method, mind you!) AND pay $10 to ship the replacement. Uh, no…for $20 (what I figure that all will add up to), I'll go buy another coffee grinder knowing it will burn out after a few months. Will NOT buy another Cuisinart, that's for sure. Poor service just dropped my rating for this product to the lowest possible, a single star.

The BEST spice grinder out there!I have owned this grinder since March 2023.
I have purchased many different brands of spice grinders over the years, in search of the most efficient one. Krups offered the best performance of all the others I have tried, until now. I can't overstate enough that this Cuisinart outshines all others.
I LOVE that the container is large enough to grind big batches. It will grind way more at a time than the others, and do a better job,…grinding flawlessly. There is no need to pick it up and shake it to get spices to fall over the blades.
All the parts above the motor can go in the dishwasher. The only thing I have to clean manually sometimes is to brush out the dust on top of the motor. With the others, I always had to put rice in them to clean them, and odors remained after cleaning. It took longer to clean them than it did to grind the spices.
It does have a storage compartment for the cord, but I have found it to be a struggle and time-consuming to push back in and it feels like I might damage the cord, so I just wrap the cord around the motor and secure the plug part for storage. They could use some improvement with that situation… Still, I give this one 5+ stars and will purchase another when this one konks out. (within reason)
Highly, highly recommended!

Great productI use this all the time. it is great for making powdered spices. if you just pulse you can get smaller pieces of an herb such as Rosemary the you don't have the large pieces in your soups. Haven't used for nuts.

Loose blades, leaks, and microplasticsI'll add my own experiences, but encourage you also to read the reviews left by Sayrah (jan 21, 2023) & Taylor Lee (Nov. 12 2022). They are both 100% correct
In no particular order:
The grinding blade arrived very loose. This apparently is "normal", but supposed to snug up when installing the cup into the grinding base. Mine still has a good deal of lateral and vertical play even when installed. This has caused any liquids or oils to leak out into the grinding base.
The provided recipes do not seem to be appropriate for the spice mill. I tried making Tahini (a precursor to the Hummus recipe), and there is so much 'dead space' beneath the blades that about half of my ingredients were left whole. I had to dig things our and move them around with a chopstick to try and get them incorporated. very inconvenient.
The hummus recipe also cannot be right. The grinder has a stated max capacity of 1/4 cup, yet the recipe states add 19oz of chick peas, 2 Tbs of lemon juice, 3 Tbs of Tahini, 1/3 – 1/2 cup of olive oil, plus the spices. It cannot fit. It also said to add the oil through 'the feed tube', which is not a part of this device. this recipe must have been copied from a food processor. It's the only way this makes sense. I gave it a shot to see what would happen and, unsurprisingly, the grinder wasn't able to mix the full quantity. The motor overheated before it was finished. This might sound like operator error, but it is what the recipe said to do.
Other things that need improvement:
– In the first day of use, the plastic grinding lid has become pitted from whatever hard spices I've ground. How much plastic is making it into my spice mixes?
– The plastic lid has 90 degree angles where it fits over the cup. Fine powder gets stuck here and is very difficult to remove
– The inside base of the stainless steel grinding is not stainless steel. It has a central cutout where the blade pokes through and that is made of plastic. More places to wear down, shed plastic, and provide crevices for spices to embed.
Very disappointed in this grinder. Definitely heed the other 1- and 2-star reviews.

The best substitute for traditional granite motor and pestleThe best substitute for traditional granite motor and pestle. Great on wet or dry ingredients. My current one is about 6 years old and still working well. Don't settle for cheaper grinders or coffee grinder. I used this grinder to hard dried Louisiana shrimp or dried beans. The pictures are my homemade shrimp paste condiment with this grinder. I made batches and mixed everything in a bowl. I hand washed and no shrimp paste smell. I only wish inner lid to avoid flyaway dry ingredients. Sometimes I use shrink-wrap under the lid. This grinder is not suitable to pound featherback fish paste to make fish cakes. Just use dough hooks from hand mixer.
I already bought another for backup as I can't live without this grinder. I do have 2 Asian traditional granite motor and pastal sets but not too good to use on my granite kitchen counter.

Excellent little grinder - checks all the boxesI bought this grinder with some trepidation because the first several reviews were quite negative. I'm glad I bought it because it is proving to be a star. I use it for a range of things – hard legumes and spices, including Indian spices, seeds, softer spices, breadcrumbs, etc. I've occasionally used it with wet grinding of pastes (ginger, garlic, chutneys, etc) if it's not too runny.
It has several unique features that are difficult to find in a grinder this size:
– Its size is just right – small enough to grind small quantities of things like spices without having a huge leftover to store for weeks; large enough that you don't need too many rounds when grinding larger quantities
– Blade design seems efficient. It seems to completely pulverize anything I put in it (including hard spices) in a small fraction of the time it takes for other grinders (like coffee grinders). It does this so fast that the motor has never been even close to overheating. And it seems to work well always – I haven't yet discovered anything it won't grind well
– So far, its longevity is good (about 8 months) – it has lasted longer than all of the highly rated coffee grinders I tried to use for these purposes
– Cleanup is trivial. The importance of this is hard to overstate. Other grinders such as coffee grinders claim easy cleanup but this is an order of magnitude better. You can simply take the bowl and lid off completely and put them in the dishwasher and they will come out fully clean. No more fiddling with brushes etc. to try to remove the bits and residues of spices that are left in the fixed bowls of other grinders.
The only concerns so far:
– The lid has a rubber ring that seems necessary for a good seal; if that is missing some of the spice/ground material might escape the bowl during grinding. The rubber ring is not small, but it's easy to lose in the dishwasher etc. if not careful
– Wet grinding seems a bit risky. The bowl can allow liquid to escape through the bottom and this could possibly enter the motor casing and damage the motor (though this hasn't happened to me so far). So this may not be suitable for wet grinding and isn't quite like a miniature full-featured grinder, which is what is really needed.
Pretty glad to have found this after trying to use coffee grinders as spice grinders for several years with limited success.
